A Tax on Porn?

Tax on Porn?

If you live in Alabama or South Carolina, you may soon have to pay a porn tax to access your favourite material online. This crafty bill proposed in the U.S. would make it illegal to sell any device that can access the internet without a special filter that stops access to any obscene material. The Human Trafficking Prevention Act uses the guise of stopping obscene material from getting into the hands of children and would require anyone purchasing a new device such as a cell phone or laptop to pay a $20 fee to have this special filter removed.

The bills are currently proposed by Alabama State Legislator Rep. Jack Williams, and by South Carolina Rep. Bill Chumley, both of whom seem to have been influenced by Nashville lawyer, amateur model, and Christian-electronic dance DJ Chris Sevier. Sevier, 40, has helped to draft and push the bill in 13 states and hopes to introduce it at the federal level in Washington D.C. has an interesting history with porn and is best known online as a bizarre anti-gay crusader for his past antics which include suing for the right to marry his laptop, and a lawsuit against Apple. His reasoning for wanting to marry his laptop? If gay people could marry the object of their sexual desire, then surely he should be allowed to marry his porn-filled laptop.

He later sued Apple when his marriage dissolved, blaming his crappy relationship on Apple for selling him a 2011 MacBook without porn filters, which led him to a porn addiction that poisoned his life and made him fancy younger women than his wife. Wait…what? Hey Chris, here’s a link to MILF videos at PORN.COM so you can see what a woman looks like.

Sevier has a history that’s full of interesting stories, most notably a warrant that’s out for his arrest in Texas. Seems that along with porn Sevier also doesn’t believe in paying child support or following court orders; he’s wanted for violating a restraining order that prevents him from communicating with his ex-wife. Sevier was also arrested and convicted in 2011 for assaulting his father-in-law in a scuffle that appears to have occurred when Servier tried to take his son during a supervised visitation and ended up sending his then 7-month-old son to the emergency room.

Notably Chris Sevier, who in court and with legislators sometimes uses the name Mark Sevier or Chris Severe, was charged with stalking and harassing country singer John Rich in 2013 as well as a 17-year old girl that worked at a Ben & Jerry’s.

So why are US state legislators paying so much attention to this guy? We’re not entirely sure. He was discharged from the Tennessee National Guard for Mental Illness and claims his experience with human trafficking comes from working with rescue groups like Orphan Secure, who have claimed that Sevier was associated with them for about a month and never went along on a mission as Sevier claims. Even the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Board of Professional Responsibility temporarily inactivated his license based on mental disability in 2011 after the board found he had lied to the court and uncovered what they described as disciplinary misconduct, including comparing country star John Rich to Adolf Hitler.

Should the Human Trafficking Act be passed with all its flaws you won’t be able to access any NSFW content on it unless you pay the $20 fee. And if that happens remember that you’ll have Chris Sevier to thank for it, along with all the state legislators like Alabama’s Rep. Jack Williams and South Carolina’s Rep. Bill Chumley that have listened to this nutjob and followed his advice.
