Porn Documentary “X-Rated” Review!

I sure do love a good documentary. Especially when the subject matter is so juicy! X-Rated: The Greatest Adult Movies of All Time takes a look at 33 of the most revolutionary pornos ever made, and devotes loving attention to our favorite classics like Deep Throat, The Devil in Miss Jones, and the Opening of Misty Beethoven. For an hour and a half, we are treated to hairy men (and women!), A WHOLE lot of tits and pussy…but no cock. It’s sad that even when doing a documentary about porn, you can’t show a dick… Really?

X-Rated treats its subject matter with a light-hearted tone, and offers us one view – that porn is awesome, fun, hilarious at times, and enjoyable! It promises us exactly what the title states: a list of the best pornographic movies ever made. It features a variety of talking heads who you may be familiar with, like Skin Diamond, Riley Reid, and Jenna Jameson, who talk about their fave classic porn flicks, and the influence they had on more recent productions. Several directors and actors from the best known movies since the 70’s are interviewed (along with a few contemporary performers), and the interviews are enlightening if for no other reason than that they show people who had fun doing what they did, and who are sincerely trying to raise their genre of movies to another level.

X-Rated briefly handles the early pornographic stag films before discussing the first major title: Deep Throat. Deep Throat is credited in bringing porn into the mainstream for most of the 70’s, and several people talk about the movie and how it was the most profitable porn movie ever made. Another couple of movies with familiar titles pass the revenue: Debbie Does Dallas, Flashpoint, Pirates, and one of my personal favorites: Nothing to Hide II.

Like I mentioned earlier, this documentary rarely criticizes the movies featured. It’s not surprising considering it’s a best-of list. Occasionally, someone points out that they’re not too happy about the final product, but those instances are rare. This makes X-Rated look like a mash-up of makings-of where we are giving fun anecdotes about the movies and people praising each other as if their careers depended on it. Director Bryn Pryor is also responsible for writing and directing dozens of porn flicks, so it should come as no surprise that this is an adult entertainment promotional piece.

If you grew up with some of the titles/actors on display here, it’s fun to see how some of them have aged… Especially when it concerns movies predating the year 2000. Ron Jeremy (Roommates, Scoundrels) was actually much slimmer (and kind of a fox), and Mike Horner (Flashpoint, Nothing to Hide II) has gotten really, really old… It’s kind of weird to see senior women who remind me of my grandma talk about their on screen anal scenes from movies made 40 years ago. Then again, everybody has a past I guess.

It’s a fun documentary to watch, especially if you’re familiar with the titles featured. I loved how sex-positive it was, considering this is an industry that is so easy to criticize. Full of fairly hardcore sex scenes, this sexy documentary has someone for everyone. And who knows, you might even learn a thing or two?
